A few days ago, Nintendo released Rhythm Heaven Groove.
And it's great!
I am really pleasantly surprised at how much I like this game. When I saw it first revealed in Nintendo directs, I mostly ignored it. But the multiplayer looked very fun so when I saw the lower-than-usual price, I decided to grab the game.
The single-player games began somewhat easy, with me getting the best rank (“Amazing! You got a medal!”) on my first try for many of them. But once I got around half-way through the game, I began finding them nicely challenging! Most of the time I now have to spend a little while in the practice, and then get an “OK” on my first shot, and have to go back later to get the medal, which I think is a nice place to be for the difficulty. It is surprising how varied the gameplay feels, even though every game is just about pressing “A” at the right time, and sometimes using the D-pad. Tsunku♂ and Nintendo really did a great job!
The game also has a lot more stuff to do than I expected. The main single-player is long and really well done, but there are also loads of single-player extras like Beatspell which I'm excited to get to later. The multiplayer games are also fun, with a bit of a different structure than the single-player. Instead of each column being of four unrelated games and a remix, they are just 3-high, with each next game a harder – often, much harder – version of the one below. This way you and your friends get a sense of mastery as you climb the ladder for each game kind of game, which is very satisfying. At least, that's how it works for the collaborative games (I haven't tried the versus ones yet).
I give this game a whole-hearted thumbs-up: 👍!
